3D Printed Parts for R2D2

There's lots more to building a droid than meets the eye. There are an incredible number of small parts. The original CS:L parts were only described by 2D drawings. As part of the design process I created 3D models of the R2 parts that I'm building. The published models are based on the R2BC drawings now called CS:L (Club Spec: Legacy). For a while I was publishing 3D models for what was called R2.0. Those parts are now referred to as CS:R (Club Spec: Revisited). The new CS:R parts have been released in 3D format. For more information see the Forum thread "Club Spec: Revisited.... " The models that were here are obsolete. Model files in .stl format for some of the parts have been posted at https://astromech.net/droidwiki/Category:3D_Files. I have made modifications to many of the parts to make it easier to print them.

I'm building up my list of parts that I can actually print. Printing is harder that 3D modeling in that not everything you can model can be printed with acceptable results. In addition, I like to add features to my parts that make them more useful than standard part designs. Note that I'm more than willing to make custom versions of 3D printed parts on request. . There is no charge for the customization, with the caveat that I retain the design information and can sell copies of the part to other R2BC members.

Finishing 3D Printed Parts

I've assembled a set of notes and illustrations on what you'll need to do to convert a handful of parts into a finished model. I started out, most likely like many of you did, using classic spray can paints. Over the years, I've found it difficult to control the results, particularly for small parts. I invariably wind up with too much paint where I don't want it.

Spray Booth: If you are going to spray paint you need something to contain the overspray. My first attempt was a corner made from cardboard sheets that were approximately 24 in square. It worked fine, for what it was, but using spray cans I was confined to spraying in my garage because of the fumes.
Many years ago I acquired a Badger 150 Airbrush and made good use of it on a refinishing project that had no connection to R2. Having gotten fed up with spray cans I decided to go back to the airbrush, using acrylic paints would eliminate the issue of the fumes. There is a lot of information online about spray booths and using airbrushes. The details of the Spray Booth that I designed are here. (work in progress!)
